When taking this course, one must know the in and outs to creating a good resume, portfolio, reference, and other necessary documents when applying to college. Do not fear! Here are some do's and don'ts for your application checklist.
good references
There is only so much that a college admissions or scholarship selection panel can learn about a student from his/her transcripts, resume, and test scores. In order to increase your chances of being a recipient for two or more scholarships, you need to stand out of the many applicants. Here is a guideline of the type of reference you need in order to get those bills rolling in!

1. ASK THE RIGHT PERSON
Friends or family members are usually not the best choice for a reference letter as they may seem biased.
Good Recommenders
Counselor
Teacher you've known for over a year
Principal
Government workers if you've worked with them for a long time.
Not So Good Recommenders
Teachers who barely know you (Ex: Senior year instructors
Family (sorry mom)
2. ASK EARLY
Ask for the letter at least 2 weeks before it is due. Teachers are often busy, so asking for the letter in advance shows that your respect their time and allows them to really think about what they will write.

3. ASK FOR MULTIPLE LETTERS
If you are planning to apply for more than one scholarship, ask for multiple copies of the same reference letter (addressed to " To whom it may concern"). That way, you won't have to worry about asking him/her for the same reference letter repeatedly.
4. ASK WITH A NOTE
When asking for a letter, you must give the recommender a paragraph summary that includes:
1. What the letter is for
2. What your goals/dreams are
3. Why you want to win this scholarship/ get into this college
4. When the deadline for the scholarship is
This will give the recommender ammunition to write a killer letter of recommendation.

5. SAY THANKS
Don't forget to say thank you! You can show your appreciation by writing a quick thank you note or an email when they give you your reference letter. You can also continue showing your gratitude even long after they wrote your reference letter. The next time you need a letter, they will remember how grateful you were!
